Mr. Brown was once lying in bed when a man entered his room and tried to open the lock of his writing desk. The thief was sure that Mr. Brown was asleep and he was astonished when he heard a loud laugh from behind him.

“What are you laughing at?” asked the thief.

“I’m laughing at you, my good fellow,” said Mr. Brown.“when I think what risks you are taking in the hope of finding money by night in a desk where the owner of it can never find any in the day.”

 

有一次，當布朗在床上躺著時，一個男人進入了他的房間，并試圖打開他寫字臺上的鎖。那個賊舉得布朗先生一定睡著了。當他聽到從他身后傳來一陣大笑時，他下了一跳。

“你笑什么？”賊問。

“我在笑你呀，伙計，”布朗先生說，“我笑你，青天白日的我都找不到一分錢，黑燈瞎火的你能做到啥？”
