在和外國人接觸的時候，口語中俚語是必不可少的。但俚語并不是主干成分，而是必要的補充。英語俚語是一種非正式的語言，通常用于在非正式的場合。英語初學者應該把注意力放在基礎英語的學習上，對于俚語，如果看到了，就隨便了解一下，不必深究。但如果有了較高的英語水平，想要使自己的英語變得更加地道；或者是想融入到英美文化中，比方已經或準備出國的人，會愈發在交流過程中感到英語地道化的優越性，這時學習俚語則有著事半功倍的效果，而且由于基礎比較扎實，對俚語語境的了解和把握都比較到位，從而使交流過程變得生動而風趣。
