downtown, uptown

在美國英語里經常使用downtown以及uptown來表示城市的區域。

●down一般指城市的中心以及周邊。尤其指的是辦公區和商業街；Let’s take a taxi downtown.

●uptown一般指離城市的中心比較遠的住宅區域：

They live an old uptown neighborhood.雖然在英國英語中沒有完全和downtown意思相符的詞，但是city/town centre和其意思比較接近。和uptown意思比較接近的英國英語有the outskirts 或the suburbs:

They live in an old neighbourhood on the outskirts/in the suburbs.

Getting Directions on the Phone  打電話給客戶指路

C=Carolyn Smith  B= Bruce brogden

C: Hollo.Carolyn Smith speaking.but I can’t find the directions to your office. Can you give me them again?

  你好， 我是卡羅琳.史密斯。

B: Hello, Carolyn. This is Bruce Brogden. I’m sorry. but I can’t find the directions to your office. Can you give me them again?

  你好，卡羅琳。我是布魯斯.布羅格登。對不起，我找不到去你辦公室的路了，你能再告訴我一趟嗎？

C: No problem. Where are you now?

  沒問題，你現在在哪里？

B: I’m downtown…at the corner of Fourth Street and Washington Avenue.

  我在市中心，在第四大街和華盛頓路的街角。

C: OK. Go down Washington Avenueuntil you get to the ABC building/

  好的，沿著華盛頓路一起走到ABC大樓。

B: Do I walk past the ABC building?

  我要走過ABC大樓嗎？

 

為了讓對方知道接電話的人是誰，我們一般會說自己的名字+ speaking。

在語氣比較隨便的對話中想說“很高興你讓我幫忙辦事”，可以用no problem.

在美國英語中，人們說downtown而不說I’m in the town centre.或者I’m in the centre of the town.

“拐角”既可以說at the corner,也可以說on the corner.

在英國英語中，人們用go straight on 來代替go straight.
