      3. hand
Quite a number of phrases formed from the word hand are very similar to their Chinese counterparts. Here are some obvious examples: a fresh hand, short of hands, hand in hand and wash one’s hands of something. But do not always take this for granted. Study these examples and you will understand.
He livers from hand to mouth. (He has just enough money to live on.)
We gave them a big hand. (We gave them lots of applause.)
      英語用hand這個詞構成的許多短語也和中文的用語十分想像。明顯的例子是:a fresh fand(新手),shart of hands(人手短缺),hand in hand(手拉手,聯手合作),wash one’s of something(洗衣不干)。不過,我們不要以為總是這樣不。看看這兩個例子你就會明白了。
He lives from hand to mouth.(他的收入僅夠糊口)。)
We gave them a big hand. (我們對他們報以熱烈掌聲。)
      4 wrist
We wear wrist-watches.Hendwatch” is nothing but a Chionese name for the object. We wear watches on our wrists, not on our hands. And we fasten a watch to the wrist with a wristband, which also means cuff—the end of a sleeve.
When you hav edone something wrong, your father may give you a slap on the qrist. He does not reallt strike you. He just gives you a gentle punishment or warming.

      我們戴wrist-watches(腕表),“手表”只不過是中國人的說法。我們把表戴在腕上而不是戴在手上的。我們用wristband(表帶)將手表系在腕上,這wristband也指衣袖的袖口。
      當你做錯什么事的時候,你爸爸可能會give you a slap on the wrist.他不是真的打你,他只不過是給你溫和的責備或警告罷了。
      5palm
Sometimes Chinese and English people express some ideas in simillar ways. For example, to express the idea that a person knows a place very well, we both use the same figure of speech: he knows the place like the palm of his hand.
But if someone carries off the palm in a match, the palm he carries off refers to the leaf of the palm tree, which is a symbol of victory. So carry off the palm means.” Be victorious” .This figure of speech is purely English. There is no such expression in Chinese.
      掌,手心
有時中國人和英國人表達思想的方式差不多。例如,一個人對一個地方很了解,我們都有相同的形象說法:了如指掌(He knows it like the palm of his hand).
      不過,如果說某人在一場賽事中贏得了the palm這時的plam就不是掌心,而是象征勝利的棕櫚葉,所以carry off the palm的意思是:“贏得了勝利”。這純粹是珠比喻說法,中文時砂巖有這樣的習語。
      6finger
How many fingers does each of your hands have? “Five” must be your answer. Now let’s name them in English from the smallest: the little figer, the ring finger, the middle figer, the indexfiger… What is the last one called? It is called “thumb”. So, you see, the thumb is out of the ordinary. There is a special name for it.
Each finger has its own part to play. If your fingers are all thumbs, that is too bad. That means youa re very clumsy.
      手指
      一只手有幾只手指?“五只”,你肯定會這樣回答。現在,讓我們用英文從最小那只數數看:the little fiunger(小指)、the ring finger(無名指)、the middle finger(中指)、the index finger(食指)……。還有一只叫什么呢?叫index(大拇指)。因此,你看,大拇指是與眾不同的,它有一個特別的名稱。
      每只手指成竹在胸自己的功用。如果your fingers are all thumbs,那可就糟了。這話的意思是,你很笨拙。
      7thumb
Chinese people turn up their thumbs to express appreciation. English people do so to expressnot only appreciation but also approval. Chinese people never turn their thumbs down to mean anything. But English people do. They do so to show depreciation or disapproval. Thus do so to show depreciation or disapproval. Thus in Ernglish you can say,We turn thumbs up to jak’s suggestion but they turn thumbs down to it.”
Similarly, you can warmly praise someone by sayingThumbs up! And show your dissatisfaction by saying “Thumbs down!”
      拇指,大拇指
中國人豎起大拇指表示贊賞。英國人也是這樣做,不但表示贊賞,而且表示同意。中國人從不用倒置拇指來表示什么,但英國人卻這樣做。他們以此表示輕蔑不贊成。你用英語就可以這樣說:We turn thumbs up to Jak’s suggestion but they turn thumbs down to it.(我們贊賞杰克的建議,但他們不贊同。)
      同樣你可以說Thumbs up!(頂呱呱,好得很!來熱烈贊揚某人。而說Thumbs down!(差勁,糟透了!)表示你不滿意。
