美國的大學(xué)采用名副其實的學(xué)分制。學(xué)員每成功修完一門課程便得到若干學(xué)分，當(dāng)考取到足夠的學(xué)分便可畢業(yè)，至于畢業(yè)所需學(xué)分多少則視個別院校的規(guī)定，但一般需要120至140個學(xué)分不等。由于學(xué)分制度關(guān)系，美國大學(xué)的修業(yè)期是沒有一定期限的，學(xué)員可以在三四年間取得學(xué)位資格，也可于十年內(nèi)完成其大學(xué)課程。在學(xué)分制的影響下，辦理入學(xué)申請手續(xù)在時間上也具有彈性，有意去美國留學(xué)的學(xué)生可以在一月、六月、七月及九月申請入讀，當(dāng)然，這也視各院校規(guī)而定。美國大學(xué)生是根據(jù)其考取的學(xué)分去區(qū)分身份，初入學(xué)者至考取24個學(xué)分的學(xué)員被稱為Freshman , 取得25到55個學(xué)分便屬于Sophomore , 56至89個學(xué)分者稱為Junior , 而90個學(xué)分或以上則屬于Senior 。
