      In your e-mail; of June 7 you asked about American business customs. I am happy to answer your questions and give you some advice to help you prepare for your first trip to the United States.
      •American men and women hsake hands when they are introduced on business occasions.
      •U.S. busness meetings usually begin exactly on time. A 10:00 Am appointment means you should arrive exactlyat, or a few minutes before 10:00 AM.
      • Business meetings over lunch are common. They usually start at about 12:30 and end by 2:00.
      •Don’t be surprised if you get an invitation to breakfast. It is a popular time for business get- togethers.

      A: Ken, you’ve spent some time in the Us. Havent you? 肯,你曾經在美國待過一段時間,是嗎?
      在語氣比較隨便的對話中人們會把the United States of America簡單說成the States.
       
      Yes
      K:Yes, I was in the States for a year. 是的,我在美國待過一年。
      A:Well, I’m going to New York on business next month, and I was hopeing you could give me some advice.
      我下個月要去紐約出差,希望你能給我一些建議。
      除了可以說I was hoping you could give me some advice之外我們還可以問Can you give me some advice?
      K: Sure. What do you want to know? 好的,你想知道些什么呢?
      A:What about business clothe? 商務場合的著裝怎么樣?
      K: Well, a lot of American companies have a business casual dress code.許多美國公司都有商務休閑裝的著裝規則。
      A:What do you mean, business casual?你說“商務休閑裝”是什么意思?
      如果你有什么事情不明白或者對方剛說的話表示吃驚,可以說What do you mean?
      K: For men, it usually means you should wear a shirt shoes, but no jeans, sandals, trainers or while socks.對于男人來講,商務休閑裝的意思就是你應該穿帶領帶的襯衫、系皮帶的褲子褲子和皮鞋,但是不能穿牛仔褲、涼鞋、運動鞋或白襪子。
      在美國英語里人們不說trainers而說sneakers.
      A: What about a suit?穿套裝怎么樣?
      K: Well, some American executives wear a suilt to work, so take one with you,just in case. And whatever you do, be sure to take lightweight colthes. It can be very hot and humid on New York at this time of the year.
        一些美國業務主管會穿套裝去上班,所以,你可以帶一套以防萬一。不管你帶什么,你都要帶比較輕薄的衣服。每年這個時候紐約的氣候既熱又潮濕。
      (just) in case這個意思用于表示“以防萬一“。
      在對話中,當你想要警告對方或者是給對方提出忠告可以、不可以干某事的時候,你可以使用whatever you do.來強調
      你說話的內容。
