at the end of the day按字面意思理解就是“在一天結(jié)束之時”。比如：

At the end of the day, I just want to go home and have a good sleep.(忙碌了一整天之后，我只想回家好好睡一覺。)

  近幾年來，這個短語在美國的使用頻率直線上升，同時它的意思也發(fā)生民明顯的變化。day 不再單指某一天，而是泛指任何事，所以at the end of the day相當(dāng)于at the end of (anything and everything)。換成通俗有表達(dá)式就是in the end 或after all is said and done,也就是中文里常用的“說到底，說穿了”。比如：

  Don’t be too hard on yourself. At the end of the day, you are just human and you can’t always be perfect.（別對自己太過苛求了。說到底，你只是個普通人，不可能永遠(yuǎn)不犯錯。）

  I don’t really wish to earn a whole lot of money, I just wanna be healthy, At the end of the day ,that’s what really matters.（我并不希望賺大錢。我只希望身體健康。說到底，這才是真正重要的。）

  Ignore those nasty comments! The more popular you get, the more you will be attacked. At the end of day, some people are simply jealous of your huge success.（別理會那些惡毒的評論你越受歡迎，就會受到越多的攻擊。說穿了，有些人就是妒忌心重，見不得你成功而已。

粗略估計一下，十個人說at the end of the day,只有一個是真正表示“在一天結(jié)束的時候”， 剩下九個都是“說到底”的意思。正是由于這種引申義用得太多，很多英語為母語者對at the end of the day 產(chǎn)生了反感情緒。Plain English（一個關(guān)注英語用法變化的民間組織，其總部設(shè)在英國）在2004年曾經(jīng)作過調(diào)查，at the end of the day以絕對領(lǐng)先的票數(shù)獲得了“最令人厭煩的調(diào)查，at the end of the day已經(jīng)“到底”，那week, month和year往哪里擺？

At the end of the day的泛濫程度在它早已潛入的中文滸歌曲的歌詞中可見一斑。香港女歌手關(guān)心妍幾年前的一首《負(fù)擔(dān)不起》就在高潮部分反復(fù)唱道：
