外國人說“謝謝”似乎比中國人多。中國人很多時候是在得到大量幫助時會說“謝謝”，并且非常誠懇。而西方人表達“謝謝”的場合更多，如無論是上下級或者親朋好友或者家庭成員之間也常說“謝謝”，即便是一些小事，甚至分內之事。在他們看來，“thank you “只是習慣性的用語，并不表示多大的謝意。
例如每堂課結束后，英美學生會習慣性地跟老師說“thank you “。回答“thank you “時，中國人往往會說“這是我應該做的。”，把這句話直譯過來就是“It’s my duty. ”，這會讓英美學很困惑，也很不愉快，因為“It’s my duty. ”的含意是：我本不想做，但這是我的職責，我不得不做。這就是中西方思維的差異。適當的回答應該是“It’s my pleasure.（我很樂意）”，“Don’t mention it .（沒什么）”“You’re welcome . （不用謝）”。
