中國人給陌生人道歉，通常直接說聲“對不起”“不好意思”等等；對親密的人則會使用非正式甚至隨意的道歉語，如“XX，是我不好，對不起啦。”對朋友，則偏向使用正式而多種策略混合的道歉方式，如“XX，這是我的錯，我不該誤會你。我向你道歉。我保證不會再有下次了。”
想比較而言，美國人對朋友道歉沒有那么客氣，對親密的人又沒有那么隨便。美國人說“對不起”并不一定是做錯了什么事，覺得理虧。比如請人讓路，說聲“對不起”，其實是叫你“Get out of my way ,so I can come out .”（你讓開，我才過得去。）只是這種“命令”，有了“對不起”，讓人容易接受罷了。所以嚴格來說，在不少場合，“Excuse me ”等于漢語的“借過”或“勞駕”。
英美人處處道歉，源于他們的文化以自我為導向，強調自身利益，你我界線分明，說話做事，唯恐有礙他人，時刻不忘避免“侵權”行為。咳嗽、放屁、打噴嚏等會傳播細菌，污染環境，對旁人的感覺器官也是一種侵害，“I’m sorry ”是對他人的一種“賠償”也是不花分文的，但于情于理都是必須付的。
